BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Adams and Reese’s Birmingham Of Counsel Richard P. Carmody added to an impressive list of career accomplishments over the weekend with the reception of the 2017 Albert Vreeland Pro Bono Award from the Alabama State Bar Committee on Volunteer Lawyer Programs on Saturday, July 15, during the Alabama State Bar annual meetings at the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort in Point Clear.

The Vreeland Award is presented annually by the Alabama State Bar’s Pro Bono and Public Service Committee to dedicated members of the legal profession who have provided representation at no cost to some of Alabama’s neediest persons, including low-income families, military veterans, homeless and battered women.

Carmody earned the distinction following decades of service through his pro bono and community service work. A member of the Adams and Reese Pro Bono Committee, he was named the firm’s inaugural Adams and Reese Senior Pro Bono Fellow in January 2016, and he works extensively with the National Appleseed Network of 17 social justice centers in the U.S. and Mexico This includes the Montgomery-based Alabama Appleseed Center for Law & Justice, for which he is a past Founders Advisory Board Member. Over the course of the fellowship, he has devoted between 50-75 percent of his working hours to pro bono projects in collaboration with Appleseed.

The reception of the Vreeland Award come just one month after Carmody and Adams and Reese Associate Anna Davis earned the prestigious Good Apple Award from National Appleseed for the organization’s 2017 Edition of Protecting Assets & Child Custody In the Face of Deportation, A Guide For Practitioners Assisting Immigrant Families.

Carmody joined Adams and Reese in 2003 as part of a merger with an Alabama law firm in which he had practiced since 1975. He practices primarily in the area of bankruptcy and creditor’s rights, focusing on the representation of secured lenders in the structuring and workout of lending transactions, including bankruptcy court litigation. He also provides counsel to lenders for complex commercial transactions and internal policies.

A founding member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, Carmody has a nationwide reputation for solid counsel in fields of bankruptcy and secured lending. He became the first lawyer in Alabama to become certified as a specialist in Business Bankruptcy by the American Board of Certification in 1992 and has been a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy since 1999.

Carmody completed his Bachelor of Arts in Finance at the University of Illinois in 1964 and earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1975.
