Founded in 1837 as a southern railroad town, Atlanta is one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. With a population of more than 463,000 residents and growing, it is the most populous city in Georgia and serves as the metropolitan city center of the 10-county metro Atlanta region. Atlanta is the county seat of Fulton County and the capital of the state of Georgia.
Home to the busiest and most efficient airport in the world, Atlanta is a transportation and logistics hub. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, constructed in the 1950s, was a key early economic driver for the city. Today, the airport functions as a global gateway, serving more than 100 million domestic and international travelers in a single year. In recent decades, the media, technology, banking, and film/television production industries have further grown the Atlanta economy into the eighth largest in the U.S.
Atlanta is a city of southern culture infused with many multi-cultural influences, hosting more than 35 million visitors each year. Popular tourist attractions include the Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, World of Coca-Cola, CNN Center, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and The King Center, The Carter Center and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, Atlanta History Center, Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, the Fox Theater, and the High Museum of Art.
Atlanta is home to three major sports teams: the Atlanta Braves MLB team, the Atlanta Hawks NBA team, and the Atlanta Falcons NFL team. The city has also served as host for many international, professional and collegiate sporting events, including the 1996 Summer Olympics, two Super Bowls, the PGA Championship, and many NCAA Final Four basketball tournaments. The city is also home to the largest concentration of colleges and universities in the southern U.S., including Georgia State University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, Clark Atlanta University, the Morehouse School of Medicine, John Marshall Law School and others.
