Elizabeth Maron joined Adams and Reese in 1996 and is a founding member of the Jackson office. She focuses her practice on education law, employment law, real estate transactions and general litigation.
Elizabeth's primary focus is defending companies and public entities in lawsuits filed by current/former employees. Her employment law practice involves working closely with personnel directors and — in the case of smaller employers — company or public entity management charged with personnel decisions or enforcement of personnel decisions. She is a frequent speaker on employment and education issues and provides training for clients on how to avoid harassment and discrimination claims, including sexual harassment and racial discrimination claims.
Elizabeth is a leader in the education practice at the firm and works with educational entities including school districts, community colleges and universities. She assists school districts in following state and federal laws and doing so professionally and with compassion, particularly with cases involving students and employees. She has been a school district hearing officer for school employee disciplinary hearings and has advised school districts on such matters as student discipline, employee/student free speech, contracts, Title IX compliance, policy development, public bidding issues and conducting investigations into employee complaints of harassment and discrimination.
Her other significant contributions include:
- Serving on the team that represented the sale of 6.8 million acres of timber holdings, much of it concentrated in the South and Great Lakes regions, by International Paper Co., described as the largest land transaction since the Louisiana Purchase by the United States.
- Successfully representing clients in obtaining and resisting temporary restraining orders/preliminary injunctions, in defending EEOC charges, in administrative hearings on termination and non-renewal of school employees and in litigation concerning employment decisions.
- Obtaining numerous summary judgment rulings, effectively ending the litigation for clients and the accompanying costs.
- Applying her knowledge to the specific challenges of litigation for public entity clients.
- Representing clients in the purchase and sale of timberlands and the issues accompanying that sector of real estate.
Elizabeth feels fortunate to be surrounded by such able mentors at her firm and has tried to emulate certain approaches to the legal practice that she admires in many of her colleagues.
In her free time, she enjoys reading authors Dick Francis and Elizabeth Peters, traveling and playing tennis. Playing singles in the state tournament for her USTA team a few years ago is something she recalls with pride, especially after being away from the sport for some time.
