Adams and Reese is pleased to announce that H. Lee Moffitt, former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and founder of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, has joined the firm as special counsel in the governmental relations and legislative law practice areas. He will be resident in the firm’s Tallahassee and Tampa offices. The announcement was made by Adams and Reese Managing Partner, Charles P. Adams, Jr.
According to Adams, “Lee’s distinguished legal and political career has made him one of the most widely-respected figures in the state of Florida and he is nationally known for his philanthropic efforts as a leading advocate for cancer research.”
Moffitt served in the Florida Legislature in Tallahassee for 10 years, including serving as Speaker (1982-1984), Chair of the Commerce Committee (1978-1980), and Chair of the House Reapportionment Committee (1980-1982). He has had an independent legal/lobbying practice for more than 25 years.
B. Jeffrey Brooks, Governmental Relations Practice Leader adds, “Lee not only has an impressive political career, but is also responsible for establishing a world-renowned cancer and research center in Florida.”
A cancer survivor himself, Moffitt was inspired in the 1970’s by the cancer deaths of three friends and conceived the idea for the creation of a state-of-the-art cancer research center in Florida. Spearheading a $70-million appropriation through the Legislature, the facility was built in 1986. During his term as Speaker, the Legislature named the cancer center after Moffitt, in honor of his commitment to the initiative. The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute is now recognized as a National Cancer Institute Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center - the only center in Florida so designated. Moffitt continues to actively serve on boards and committees of the center, as he has for over 25 years. For his work in the fight against cancer, in 2007, the Association of Community Cancer Centers presented him with its distinguished National Achievement Award.
Moffitt serves on the Florida I-4 High Tech Corridor Council and has previously served on numerous committees including the Comptrollers Task Force on Regulatory Decoupling, Committee of 100 Tampa Chapter, Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, Speakers Committee on Florida's Future, and the Worldwide Unitary Tax Commission, to name a few. He has received many awards for his public service including the Allen Morris Award for the Most Effective Member of the Florida House of Representatives (1976 and 1982).
Moffitt is a graduate of the University of South Florida (B.A., 1964), the Cumberland School of Law (J.D., 1967), and in 1985 received his Doctor of Humane Letters from USF. He was the first graduate of USF to be elected to the Florida legislature and serve as Speaker of the House. While in the Legislature he secured the funding for USF's Sun Dome and the College of Engineering building. Moffitt co-chaired the Presidential search committee that selected Betty Castor to be President of USF. He also spearheaded two amendments to the Florida Constitution: Merit Retention of Appellate and Supreme Court Judges and a right to Privacy.
