E. Gregg Barrios

E. Gregg Barrios joined the Adams and Reese New Orleans office in 1990 and is a Partner in the Litigation Practice Group. He focuses his practice on energy, marine, and environmental/toxic tort litigation, as well as class action/complex, product liability, and commercial litigation.

Gregg has successfully litigated a variety of matters ranging from personal injury and property damage claims for energy, oil and gas, and maritime incidents, collisions, towage, oil pollution, limitation of liability, construction disputes, contract litigation and other disputes, as well as products liability, commercial, RICO, anti-trust and unfair competition, constitutional violations, and marine and energy insurance coverage issues in federal and state courts in Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, and Florida. He has counseled numerous clients and helped them develop strategies for minimizing risk and avoiding litigation expense, including the development of formal risk management programs, incident reporting systems, compliance programs, and contractual risk allocation.

Since joining the firm, Gregg has successfully handled numerous appeals involving maritime, oilfield/refinery, and complex litigation matters, including:

  • Sanders v. Tidewater, Inc., 635 So.2d 365 (La. App. 4th Cir. 1994) – affirming defense verdict in Jones Act case involving alleged brain damage;
  • Justiss Oil Co., Inc. v. Kerr-McGee Refining Corp., 75 F.3d 1057 (5th Cir. 1996) – affirming defense verdict in refinery explosion involving multiple deaths; and
  • Thistlethwaite v. Gonzalez, 106 So.3d 238 (La. App. 5th Cir. 2012) – reduction of $25 million punitive damages award to $5.1 million on appeal.

  • Co-Author and Editor of the Adams and Reese’s Oilfield Maritime Risks and American Maritime Law.
  • Served as Past President of the Advisory Board and Finance Committee Member of St. Michael Special School, New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Volunteer, with his wife Shari, as a Host Family for the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ Catholic Charities, housing and caring for newborn babies before they are adopted.
