Trademark News

On December 3, 2008, trademark owners will have the opportunity to acquire the newly approved .TEL generic top level domain (gTLD) on a first come, first served basis. It is anticipated that .TEL will receive a lot of attention from cybersquatters, and we strongly recommend that you consider pre-emptive registrations for defensive purposes.

There are also some affirmative benefits to the .TEL gTLD that may or may not be a fit with your business. Unlike other domains, .TEL is designed to provide registrants with a global real-time directory for purposes of enhanced communications with current and prospective clients. It allows any user who is connected to the Internet through a desktop or mobile device to search and retrieve contact information (i.e., address, telephone number, E-mail, VOIP, URL and/or map of location) for a registered company via search terms or by typing yourcompany.tel.

The .TEL gTLD will be offered in three phases, a “Sunrise” launch, restricted to eligible registered trade mark owners, followed by a “Landrush” phase, providing registration for premium prices, and then General Availability.

We recommend applying for a .TEL gTLD prior to the start of the Sunrise launch, scheduled for December 3, 2008 – February 2, 2009. To learn how Adams and Reese LLP can assist you in the application process, please contact:
