John T. Kovach joined Adams and Reese in 2017, as an Associate in the Litigation Practice Group in the firm’s Houston office. John is a trial attorney with an emphasis in civil defense litigation. He defends businesses and individuals in commercial disputes involving business separations and contractual disputes as well as professional liability, personal injury, general negligence, and premises liability claims. He has represented clients in the transportation, construction, oil/gas and restaurant industries, as well as in property damage and personal injury claims.

Among his representative experience, John has: 

  • Obtained a jury verdict for defendant construction contractor on claims that the client damaged plaintiff energy company’s gas pipeline.
  • Represented commercial trucking companies and drivers in claims involving accidents, catastrophic injury and wrongful death, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations issues in courts across Texas. He has also defended companies who assist drivers with disabilities utilizing specialized driving control systems as part of programs developed by the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services.
  • Defended construction and oil and gas companies against personal injury and property damage claims involving general contractors, sub-contractors, highway construction personnel, pipe and pipeline layers, oil and gas operators, and drillers. He has also represented clients in fracking-related injury claims and plant explosion cases.
  • Represented restaurant industry clients in product liability, slip and fall, and property damage cases related to fire incidents. Many of these cases have involved product issues when determining what caused the fire, including alleged defects in appliance heating coils and lighting.
  • Handled property damage and personal injury claims related to severe weather incidents in Texas, including water damage from flooding, wind damage from tornados, and home and automobile damage and accidents from ice, snow and thunderstorms.
  • Represented veterinarians in administrative proceedings before the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
  • Represented companies in fee dispute claims and alleged malpractice claims.

John is certified to serve as an attorney and guardian ad litem in the State of Texas. In this capacity, he has handled matters involving estate planning; independent administration cases of intestate estates; property tax delinquency cases; and incapacitated minors suffering from autism, cerebral palsy, severe epilepsy, blind and deaf, and other impairments.

In the legal community, John is a member of the Houston Bar Association, the South Texas College of Law Houston Young Alumni Council, Houston Young Lawyers Association, and the Texas Association of Defense Counsel. John is also a member of the Texas Association of Sports Officials, Ecclesia Church, and the Texas A&M Foundation.

He earned his J.D. cum laude from South Texas College of Law Houston. While a law student, John received numerous awards in mock trial programs, including the “Best Defendant’s Memorandum of Law” award at the Stetson Law National Pre-Trial Competition, Finalist and Top Ten Advocate awards at the T. Gerald Treece STCL Summer Trial Academy, and a Finalist award in an intramural mock trial competition. He received a CALI Award in Property Law (finishing first in his class) and was recognized as an STCLH Langdell Scholar in Tort Law, Property Law, and Evidence.

John received his B.S. cum laude in Agricultural Economics with an emphasis in Finance and Real Estate from Texas A&M University in 2010.

In his spare time, John enjoys spending time with his friends and family, playing sports and attending sporting events, hunting and fishing, officiating football games, and attempting to be a bourbon aficionado.
