Justine M. Tate joined Adams and Reese in 2016 as an Associate in the firm’s Litigation Practice Group in the Columbia office. A former litigator with the South Carolina Department of Revenue, Justine focuses her practice on general litigation.

Most recently, Justine served as litigation counsel for the South Carolina Department of Revenue. In this role, she handled all aspects of litigation for tax-related and alcohol-licensing matters. She drafted and issued agency determinations, conducted discovery and research on complex tax issues, and represented the department before the Administrative Law Court and the South Carolina Court of Common Pleas.

Among her significant experience and accomplishments, Justine:

  • Practiced at a leading personal injury firm in Columbia, handling all aspects of the Social Security Disability hearing process on behalf of her clients at the South Carolina Office of Disability Adjudication and Review.
  • Served as a paralegal for upscale fitness club chain Equinox Inc., providing primary paralegal support to Equinox’s general counsel for all of its domestic club locations and subsidiaries, including SoulCycle.
  • Served as chief paralegal for global auction house Sotheby’s, Inc., providing primary legal support to corporate attorneys operating in the general counsel’s office.
  • Interned at The White House Office of Media Affairs. In this role, she handled media relations, press coverage tracking, and coordination of events.

In the legal community, Justine is a former Vice-Chair of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Government, Military and Public Sector Lawyers Committee. She has volunteered with the S.T.O.P. Violence Against Women Pro Bono Program, an initiative of the South Carolina Attorney General’s office. Justine is also a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, Richland County Bar Association and South Carolina Women Lawyers Association.

In the local community, Justine served as Co-Director of The Hand Up Campaign, helping spearhead fundraising and marketing initiatives for Hannah House, a transitional shelter for women in downtown Columbia. She also serves on the board of Children’s Chance of South Carolina, which provides non-medical financial assistance to families who have children with pediatric cancer.

Justine received her J.D. from New York Law School. While a law student, she served as a Senator in the Student Bar Association, appeared on the Dean’s List multiple semesters, and was a merit-based scholarship recipient.

She received her B.S. magna cum laude in Political Science from the University of Scranton. As an undergraduate, Justine was selected into numerous academic honor societies and volunteered her time with several on-campus organizations. During her senior year, she travelled to New Orleans for a service trip to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. She and her colleagues assisted in the rebuilding effort by gutting houses of elderly Louisiana citizens.

In her spare time, Justine enjoys travelling, reading, exercising and spending time with her family, friends and husband, David.
