Matthew A. Copeland joined Adams and Reese in 2015 as an associate in the Litigation practice group in the firm’s Houston office. His practice focuses on representing large public companies, private businesses, and individuals in various commercial disputes and tort litigation.

Prior to joining the firm, Matt worked at a regional law firm and focused on commercial litigation, personal injury defense, and insurance coverage disputes. Matt has also spent time representing owners, property managers, and community associations in various real estate matters.

Matt’s experience includes prosecuting and defending claims for breach of contract, fraud, and violations of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act. Matt also has extensive experience defending business against personal injury and wrongful death claims.

During law school, Matt competed for the University of Houston’s interscholastic mock trial team and served as the Symposium Editor for the Houston Business and Tax Law Journal.

Matt’s significant contributions include:

  • Obtaining a favorable judgment at trial for a homeowner in a case involving claims for trespass to try title, adverse possession, and various easements.
  • Representing a drilling contractor against claims related to damages to a well.
  • Representing an owner of a multi-family development in a case involving claims for violations of the Texas Property Code and the Deceptive Trade Practices Act and negotiating a favorable settlement for the client.
  • Being part of a team that represented a publically traded seismic data acquisition company in an NTSB investigation into the loss of life on a liftboat in the Gulf of Mexico.

Matt earned his J.D., cum laude, from University of Houston in 2012. He received his Bachelor of Journalism from The University of Texas at Austin.

Matt admires those individuals who have worked countless hours to build a thriving and successful business from the ground up. He enjoys and appreciates the responsibility that comes with calling these individuals clients.

In his spare time, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife, relaxing by any body of water, trying new restaurants, and rooting for the Texas Longhorns.
