Matthew B. Hill joined Adams and Reese in 2013 as a Partner following the firm’s expansion into Columbia. Matt serves as the Partner in Charge of the Adams and Reese Columbia office.

Matt’s real estate practice provides counsel to individuals and real estate development groups in connection with the acquisition, sale, construction and development of commercial and residential real estate projects. His practice also concentrates on providing representation to national and regional landlords and tenants as they negotiate, renew, modify and work out commercial leases involving retail, warehouse, industrial, office, and restaurant space. Matt also serves as counsel to national and regional banks and other institutional lenders in connection with credit facilities provided for office and retail development projects; industrial facilities; asset-based financings; and troubled debt restructuring and workouts.

Matt’s additional representative experience includes:

  • Representing Real Estate Investments Trusts in connection with the acquisition and disposition of REIT assets throughout the United States.
  • Representing clients with real property issues involving easements, local zoning ordinances, subdivisions, and matters involving local utilities.
  • Maintaining an active practice as counsel to banks and other institutional lenders, which provide construction, term, permanent and conduit financing to their customers.
  • Assisting clients with matters involving real property taxation, valuation and assessment.
  • Representing property owners associations with the creations and enforcement of restrictive covenants.

Matt served as the Practice Group Leader for the Business, Finance, and Real Estate Practice Group at Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims, PA, before Ellis Lawhorne merged with Adams and Reese. He also held the position as Chairman of Ellis Lawhorne’s Associates Committee.

Committed to investing personal time in the community, Matt is a past president of the Columbia Kiwanis Club during which term he was recognized as a Distinguished President. Matt has helped the Kiwanis Club’s membership grow and continue to add to the legacy of community service that the Club has built over several generations of civic-minded business and community leaders. The Club’s fundraising has been at record levels and this, coupled with the partnership with other organizations such as the Ray Tanner Foundation, enables the Club to serve the children of the community with more resources and participation.

Matt currently serves on the Board of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce and is a 2004 graduate of the Chamber’s Leadership Columbia program. He is a member of the Leadership Columbia Alumni Association and serves on its Board. Matt also serves on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Wildlife Federation.

Matt serves the South Carolina Bar as a member of the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, and he is a past recipient of the Richland County Bar Association’s Civic Star Award which is given in recognition of exceptional and meritorious public service to the community for activities outside the practice of law.

In his spare time, Matt enjoys hunting, fishing, reading and spending time outdoors with his wife and three sons.
