Matthew "Matt" W. Bates joined Adams and Reese in 2010 as an Associate in the Litigation Practice Group in the firm's Houston office. His practice focuses on civil litigation, including products and premises liability, employment law and commercial litigation.

 

Matt has defended claims including wrongful death, wrongful termination, failure to promote and discrimination. He has also participated in investigations through the EEOC and OSHA and has conducted training programs with companies to help prevent lawsuits. Matt has managed dockets of mass tort cases, obtaining hundreds of dismissals without payment in the earliest stages of litigation.

 

Matt is admitted to practice before all courts in the state of Texas and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He is a member of the Houston Bar Association, Dallas Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Defense Research Institute.

 

Matt's other significant contributions include:

 

  • Participated as part of trial team in numerous cases involving alleged toxic exposures.
  • Defended claims against product manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and premise owners in Texas and throughout the United States.
  • Employment litigation involving discrimination, wrongful termination, retaliatory discharge, failure to promote and whistleblower allegations.
  • Represented a nonprofit corporation in a declaratory judgment action, filed pursuant to the Texas Nonprofit Corporations Act, to determine the rights of the parties and various interests in a multi-million dollar parcel of commercial property in Harris County, Texas; Obtained Judgment in client's favor.
