Memphis is a major Mid-American commercial and transportation hub due to its location on the Mississippi River, the convergence of highways and railways and being home to the world’s largest airfreight terminal. With a major distribution network and a broad economic base, Memphis maintains a reputation as a major intermodal hub and Foreign Trade Zone with river, air, rail, and road facilities making Memphis one of the nation's most important distribution centers. The Memphis International Airport is less than 15 minutes from most business centers in the area and serves major airlines and commuter lines. It is the world's busiest cargo airport because of FedEx, UPS, and other air freight companies that move millions of tons of cargo annually.
Memphis has a unique culture that combines music, art, literature with numerous celebrations. One of the largest celebrations the city has is Memphis in May, a month-long series of events promoting Memphis' heritage and outreach of its people far beyond the city's borders with the Beale Street Music Festival, International Week, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (the largest pork barbecue cooking contest in the world), and the Sunset Symphony.
Carnival Memphis, formerly known as the Memphis Cotton Carnival, is an annual series of parties and festivities that salutes various aspects of Memphis and its industries. An annual King and Queen of Carnival are secretly selected to reign over Carnival activities. The African-American community staged a parallel event known as the Cotton Makers Jubilee from 1935 to 1982, when it merged with Carnival Memphis.
Home of the blues and the birthplace of rock ‘n roll, Memphis is where various American music genres were founded. Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and B.B. King all got their starts in Memphis in the 1950s. Well-known writers from Memphis include Civil War historian Shelby Foote and playwright Tennessee Williams. Novelist John Grisham grew up in nearby DeSoto County, Mississippi and many of his books are set in Memphis.
