7/17/2008 Governor Jindal Appoints Rodi to the Crime Victims Reparation Board
Governor Bobby Jindal has appointed Sharon Rodi of the New Orleans office of Adams and Reese, to the Crime Victims Reparation Board. The Board serves to regulate the award payments from the Crime Victims Reparation Fund, also assists victims of violent crimes with unrecovered costs associated with personal injury, death, or catastrophic property loss.
7/17/2008 Adams and Reese Named Among “Go-To” Law Firms for Leading Financial Services and Litigation
Research conducted by American Lawyer Media (ALM) recently revealed that in-house counsel have again named Adams and Reese among the “Go-To” Law Firms for Leading Financial Services in 2008. The firm was first recognized for this honor in October 2007. Additionally, Adams and Reese has also been named among “Go-To” Firms in Litigation in 2008.

Delegates to the 62nd Annual Meeting of The Council of State Governments’ Southern Legislative Conference (SLC) have elected Tennessee Senator Mark Norris, R-Collierville, vice chair of the Conference. Norris is Special Counsel with the Litigation Practice Group in the Memphis office of Adams and Reese. 
7/9/2008 Nine Adams and Reese Attorneys Honored Among “Best of the Bar” by Nashville Business Journal
Nashville Business Journal’s “Best of the Bar” listing for 2008. They were selected based on the number of votes submitted by other Nashville attorneys, and this year more than 1,200 votes were cast. These attorneys will be honored at a reception on August 21, and each one will be profiled in the "Best of the Bar" Special Section published in the August 22 issue of the Nashville Business Journal.

6/12/2008 LSBA to Honor Ruffin with LSBA President's Award for 2007-2008
Maurice C. Ruffin, an associate with the New Orleans office of Adams and Reese, has been selected to receive the Louisiana State Bar Association’s President's Award for 2007-2008. Mr. Ruffin was selected for this honor because of his many contributions to the community and profession, particularly his work with diversity issues and his efforts to establish a "Choose Law" program in Louisiana Schools.
6/12/2008 Adams and Reese Celebrates 20 Years of Community Service
Adams and Reese attorneys and staff celebrated 20 years of community service on Wednesday, June 12, 2008 with the anniversary of its corporate philanthropy program HUGS. Appropriately named to represent the Hope, Understanding, Giving and Support it encourages, the program was founded in June 1988 to promote social responsibility among attorneys and staff at the firm. Through HUGS, thousands of volunteer hours accompanied by hundreds of thousands of dollars have been donated to charities, schools and nonprofit organizations providing services to those in need. Nearly 100 organizations have benefited from the HUGS program thanks to volunteers from Adams and Reese’s 10 offices in five states and Washington, D.C.
6/12/2008 LSBA to Honor Surprenant with Leah Hipple McKay Memorial Award
Mark C. Surprenant, Senior Partner in Charge of Adams and Reese’s New Orleans office, will be honored by the Louisiana State Bar Association on June 12, 2008, when he receives the Leah Hipple McKay Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteerism. This year’s list is comprised of nearly 400 law firms and individuals whose rankings are based on the number of trademark registrations issued in 2007. Intellectual Property Today focuses on legal issues in patent, trademark and copyright law.
5/7/2008 Adams and Reese Attorneys Named Alabama SuperLawyers®
Adams and Reese is pleased to announce that six attorneys in the firm’s Birmingham office have been named Alabama SuperLawyers® for 2008. More than 12,000 attorneys statewide participate in the selection process, but only five percent of Alabama attorneys receive this honor. The selection process includes peer nominations, review by a blue-ribbon panel and independent research.

Donald C. Massey, a partner in the New Orleans office of Adams and Reese, has been selected as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America (LCA). Fellowship in this trial lawyer honorary society is limited and by invitation only. LCA Fellows represent less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers, and are deemed to be among the best trial lawyers in the American bar, who have exhibited accomplishment in litigation and trial work, and have superior ethical reputations.

3/4/2008 Adams and Reese Helps School District Achieve Unitary Status
On February 11th, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans affirmed the U.S. District Court’s decision to give the MCSD full unitary status, ruling the district “has done all that it could to remedy the (prior) segregation caused by official action” and had “to the extent practicable, eliminated the vestiges of racial discrimination resulting from the former racially dual system,” according to the opinion released by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in Joan Anderson v. School Board of Madison County.

Tom Clark, a partner in the Baton Rouge office of Adams and Reese, has been named to the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH) for 2008. The organization, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the State of Louisiana, is committed to bringing the humanities to as many communities in the state as possible. Along with 49 other honorees, Kane was recognized at an awards luncheon today at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans, and Kane will be featured in a special edition of CityBusiness on November 19th.

Susan C. Mathews was recently re-elected to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Spring Branch Independent School District. 4/2/2007 CityWorks Achieves Charity Status Thanks to Birmingham Attorney
Ralph Clements, an associate with the Tax Team of Adams and Reese, has successfully convinced the Internal Revenue Service(IRS) to reverse its decision and grant the local nonprofit, CityWorks, certification as a charity exempt from income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. In the first partnership of its kind, Appleseed has entered into an agreement with Adams and Reese to provide one of its partners, Christy F. Kane, as the ConocoPhillips/Adams and Reese Fellow.  Kane’s full-time role will be to manage and direct Louisiana Appleseed, a nonprofit organization that works to advance pro bono efforts focused on changing policy in the legal arena.  Her position is being funded for one year by Adams and Reese, ConocoPhillips and National Appleseed.

Bedouin L. The Louisiana Supreme Court recently issued an important, first-of-its-kind ruling upholding the constitutionality of the City of Gonzales’ participation in a public/private partnership with Cabela’s, the world’s foremost outfitter of hunting, fishing, and outdoor gear.  Thomas Gottsegen, a partner with the Appellate Practice Team of Adams and Reese, argued on behalf of the City of Gonzales.  Local officials and industry experts estimate that the store and its adjacent Sportsmen’s Park complex will create hundreds of new jobs and generate significant new revenues for the area.

4/4/2006 $88.75 Million Judgment from 1999 Explosion Reversed by the Louisiana Court of Appeal, Fifth Circuit
On March 28, 2006, the Louisiana Court of Appeal, Fifth Circuit, reversed an $88.75 million judgment against electrical-products manufacturer Thomas & Betts Corp.  Adams and Reese Appellate Team attorneys Louis C. LaCour Jr.  and Raymond P. Ward successfully prosecuted the appeal on behalf of Adams and Reese client T&B.  The judgment was in favor of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Co., its reinsurers, and one of its employees.

On January 19, 2006, the Supreme Court of Louisiana reaffirmed a 2004 decision that a parent corporation cannot be held accountable should its subsidiary company fail to provide a safe workplace. Louis C. LaCour, Jr., and Robert N. Markle, members of the Appellate Practice Team of Adams and Reese LLP, successfully prosecuted the appeal on behalf of National Union Fire Insurance of Pittsburgh, PA., ending a seven-year appellate battle between the parties.
