Adams and Reese Partner Ray Ferrera's opinion piece - "Protect Company's IP with International Patents" - was published in the Houston Business Journal's Law Magazine special section in the August 8-14, 2008, edition.
Ferrera discusses how business managers can avoid the hurdles and headaches involved in filing foreign patent applications to protect a company's technology in International markets.
Since joining Adams and Reese in the Houston office in 2007, Ferrera has become the cornerstone of the Adams and Reese patent team. He also serves as the Practice Team Leader for the firm's Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Team and is a partner with the Special Business Services Practice Group.
Ferrera is an experienced litigator, and has extensive first-chair experience at both the trial and appellate levels. He has obtained a settlement in excess of ten-million dollars in a patent case, and represented corporations and companies in a wide variety of industries in intellectual property, tax, contract and other business matters. He is also experienced in writing appellate briefs, and has delivered oral arguments before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Ferrera has facilitated the acquisition and enforcement of intellectual property assets in more than 100 countries, including nations in North and South America, throughout Europe and the Eastern European extension states, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Russia and the Eurasian extension states, Africa and Australia.
He has experience in both domestic and international prosecution and litigation, and in the handling of matters involving a wide variety of electromechanical devices and signal processing systems, including onshore and offshore energy exploration and production systems; downhole tools and imaging systems; water purification systems; liquid natural gas production and control systems; corrosion detection and control systems; satellite control and signal processing systems; telecommunications; optical lenses and scanners; optical signal processing and control systems; medical devices; automotive components; industrial valves and fasteners; computer hardware and software; and environmental monitoring and restoration systems.
Ferrera is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Texas; the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas; and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Federal Circuits. He is also registered to practice in patent cases before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
