Susan Mathews joined Adams and Reese in 2005 and is a member of the Bankruptcy Practice team, focusing on the representation of debtors, creditors, creditors’ committees, and bankruptcy litigation. As the principal bankruptcy attorney in the Houston office, she has represented clients in bankruptcy cases throughout Texas as well as New York, Delaware and Louisiana.
Her experience includes:
- Bankruptcy litigation such as debtor-in-possession credit facilities, drafting of plan and disclosure statements, stay litigation, claims objections, preference litigation, lease litigation and related matters, and representation of purchasers in asset sales in bankruptcy cases.
- Serving as former Assistant Counsel for Weingarten Realty Investors, a publicly held national REIT. There she handled all in-house litigation and bankruptcy matters, managed outside litigation counsel, drafted and negotiated transactional documents and assisted in due diligence lease review in connection with acquisitions. This resulted in her appreciation of clients’ business needs and internal deadlines and operations as well as the overall financial ramifications of a particular litigation or bankruptcy matter.
- Participating on several client service teams, including Regions Bank and WT Offshore.
- Practice experience with several large Texas firms and a national firm.
During her career, Susan has drafted proposed legislation and testified before the Texas House of Representatives Business & Industries Committee. Since becoming Partner, she has assumed greater leadership opportunities and developed knowledge about law firm economics, client development and retention and management and marketing skills. As a result, she has generated a stronger banking and bankruptcy practice in a very competitive market.
Passionate about public education, Susan was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston and served on the Board from May 2004 through 2010. She is also a sustaining member of the Junior League of Houston and a member of the National Charity League. In her free time, she is busy with three children in sports and enjoys music and live theatre as well as professional sports.
