Susan E. Mack

Susan E. Mack joined Adams and Reese LLP as Special Counsel in 2015, following her 25 year career as General Counsel of insurance and reinsurance companies. She is resident in the firm’s Jacksonville, Florida office.

Practicing law since 1982, Susan focuses primarily on service to life, health and property/casualty carriers as well as related entities such as general agents and third party administrators. Experienced in negotiating with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation and other state insurance departments, her insurance regulatory practice centers around resolving issues which impede insurance entities’ present business operations and future success.

Susan brings a particularly practical perspective to the resolution of her clients’ insurance-related issues, since she has served as Chief Claims Officer and Chief Contracts Officer of her past employers. She has substantial experience addressing insurance and corporate compliance concerns since she has served as Chief Compliance Officer in both the life/health and property/casualty contexts. Her expertise extends to abandoned property, enterprise risk management, cyber-security issues, data privacy, and internal investigations.

Noted for her experience in insurance and reinsurance arbitration, Susan was one of the founders of ARIAS-US. She continues to frequently serve as an industry arbitrator and expert witness. From ARIAS-US, she holds the baseline certification as an arbitrator and the advanced credential of certified umpire. She is also a qualified mediator with ARIAS-US. She is credentialed as a commercial arbitrator by the American Arbitration Association.

Additional representative experience encompasses:

  • Concluding insurer stock and asset acquisitions, insurer affiliations and joint ventures and forming and licensing new insurers, including assisting her corporate clients with necessary integration efforts.
  • Assessing and mitigating cyber-security exposures. Also, she has assisted clients by evaluating technology contracts for use within corporate entities and, outside corporate, has outsourced information technology divisions.
  • Skilled in corporate governance, she offers services as a corporate secretary to organizations needing such assistance.

Maintaining close ties to the Jacksonville corporate counsel community, Susan is a co-founder and past President of the North Florida Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel. In the community, she is a director of the Seamark Ranch residential facility for children and is a graduate of Leadership Jacksonville.

As to the insurance industry, she is the former Chair of the American Council of Life Insurers’ Reinsurance Committee as well as co-founder and former Chair of the Life Committee of the Reinsurance Association of America. She is a former director and present member of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel, a group of life/health senior counsel and their retained counsel.

Susan has delivered more than 50 presentations on issues ranging from complex reinsurance claims, aggregation, occurrence, and allocation to annuity reinsurance and life securitization. She is a member of the Journal of Reinsurance’s Industry Advisory Board. She serves on the Ethics Committee of ARIAS US.

In her free time, she enjoys golf, cooking and travel. She most admires her father Armando Astolfi, who was the embodiment of Winston Churchill’s admonition “Never ever give up”. Seriously wounded while fighting in France in World War II, he demonstrated extreme resilience by overcoming severe physical challenges in order to lead a productive career and become a superb husband and father.
