Timothy “Tim” Gary joined Adams and Reese in 2009 to serve on the Health Care and Governmental Relations teams. He is spearheading the health care practice in Tennessee after years of leadership in the private health care and insurance industries.
He is the former Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of a national health and wellness company providing population health management services to mid to large-size employers and health insurance companies throughout the United States. As COO, Tim was responsible for the overall management and financial status of the company.
His significant contributions include:
- Significant management experience having run a “turn around” for a company that had lost its top management team and was suffering from major structural and management issues. Tim stepped in at the request of the board, and restructured or replaced the remaining management team, financial and quality controls. Over a period of 18 months, the company transformed from a mid seven-figure annual loss to profitability.
- More than 15 years of governmental relations experience having served as an Assistant Attorney General and part of the Governor of Tennessee’s legislative team.
- Drafting and negotiating numerous pieces of major legislation dealing with such issues as health plan liability, mandated benefits, financial reserves, and other major regulatory issues.
- Serving as Vice President and General Counsel for the largest Medicaid MCO in Tennessee, lobbying the Tennessee Legislature on health insurance issues, managing relationships with the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance and establishing independent compliance functions for the company.
Over the last 10 years, Tim has held various positions with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, including Senior Counsel for Government Relations, Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Vice President and General Counsel of the Volunteer State Health Plan, Inc., and Chief Compliance and Risk Officer for Governmental Programs. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Tim serves on Congressman Diane Black's Steering Committee on Healthcare Reform.
When asked who he admires, his response was Atticus Finch, the lawyer in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird for his integrity and unwavering determination. In his free time, Tim enjoys running, music and politics.
