Birmingham Of Counsel Richard Carmody and Associate Anna Davis recently participated in the Project Homeless Connect: Monthly Legal Help Desk, an initiative of the Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program (BBVLP). Carmody and Davis were among six volunteer attorneys from Birmingham law firms helping homeless clients overcome legal issues so they can obtain identification, jobs and safe housing. The monthly BBVLP event takes place in the office of One Roof at Birmingham’s Cooper Green Mercy Health Services. One Roof is a nonprofit that coordinates services to end homelessness in central Alabama.
Among the attorneys’ services, Davis assisted client Tia Freeman with legal help to clear up several outstanding tickets with the City of Birmingham so she could get her driver’s license. Davis worked with Freeman alongside One Roof SOAR SSI/SSDI Application Specialist Keyana Lewis, who helped Freeman obtain disability benefits. Their goal was to help Freeman, who was living in her car, clear up legal and other issues so she could find safe housing. Carmody and Davis and their fellow attorneys provided legal services to 15 clients during December’s Help Desk event, which proved to be a record-breaking day.
