I take pride in advising my clients on abiding by the bevy of environmental laws, regulations, changes in the industry, insurance coverage, policies and compliance needed to ensure the success of their projects, protecting their work from groundbreaking to completion. In the event a dispute arises on the project, my goal is to advise my clients not only from a legal perspective, but also with their business interest in mind.

Steven McCommon focuses his practice on construction law, infrastructure and commercial litigation. Within these practice areas, Steven represents clients in contract review and drafting, contract negotiation, lien law, bond law, building code violations, construction defect litigation and environmental compliance.

Steven has been selected by his peers among Best Lawyers® Ones to Watch in Construction Law for the last three consecutive years, 2022-2024.

Practicing law since 2017, Steven also has experience in insurance defense, ranging from trucking accident defense and premises liability to coverage opinions and contract disputes. He served as law clerk for the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County.

While in law school at Stetson University College of Law, Steven earned an environmental law certificate of concentration. He served as an editor of the Journal of International Wildlife Law & Policy and was a court-appointed guardian ad litem.

As an undergraduate at the University of Florida, Steven earned a bachelor of arts degree in environmental science with an environmental policy specialization.

  • Represented a large construction client in successfully challenging its insurance carrier’s improper denial of coverage. In turn, the applicable insurance company picked up client’s defense in a pending construction defect suit and provided coverage pursuant to the subject insurance policy.
  • Represented a roofing contractor in a condominium construction defect case and achieved a favorable settlement due in part to successfully asserting non-compliance with Chapter 558, Florida Statutes.
  • Helped a commercial roofing contractor secure an over $400,000 additive change order from the general contractor to account for price acceleration and material shortages stemming from COVID-19.
  • Southwest Florida Air Condition Contractors Association, annual event speaker in the areas of construction defect litigation and insurance coverage
  • Florida Irrigation Society Water Summit, annual event speaker in the areas of construction licensing and supply chain impacts to the construction industry
