Trent Cotney on What AI and Robotics Mean for Roofing Contractors
Published: Oct 2, 2026
Adams & Reese Tampa partner and Construction Team Leader Trent Cotney recently joined Jill Bloom on Roofing Contractor's Best of Success podcast to discuss how artificial intelligence and robotics are reshaping construction. Cotney offered practical guidance on the opportunities and legal steps contractors should take to prepare.
Cotney identified the construction industry's skilled labor shortage as a central reason these tools are gaining ground. Contractors already use AI in scheduling, materials ordering, estimating, and customer service. AI-powered robotics represent the next step, performing physical tasks directly on jobsites.
On the timeline for adoption, Cotney expects roofing robots to begin handling repetitive tasks such as lifting materials and cleanup as early as 2030 to 2032. Humanoid robots capable of skilled construction work may emerge between 2032 and 2040.
On the legal side, Cotney urged contractors to focus on three key areas: safety protocols, liability planning and equipment ownership. He stressed that contractors need clear internal policies around confidential information, privacy and cybersecurity as these tools become part of everyday operations.
Cotney advised contractors to ensure their teams “trust but verify” AI-generated results. He encouraged contractors to stay engaged through industry associations such as NRCA and to attend events like Best of Success, where speakers will address many of these topics.
Cotney emphasized that the industry is undergoing a significant shift, and contractors who stay informed will position themselves ahead of the curve.
