Overview

Jay Palen is a member of the Adams & Reese Financial Services Practice Group and an Associate in the Jackson office.

Jay advises financial institutions and businesses, including construction companies and other clients, on a wide array of financial services matters, particularly regarding payment systems and related concerns. Sometimes called payment “rails,” these systems include card networks, ACH, real-time payment systems, wire-transfer networks, and more – integral to connecting financial institutions to enable secure, electronic transactions.

Jay has experience assisting banks with new payment rails, as well as related commercial litigation, including fraud. As new technologies make their way into our financial systems, Jay guides clients as they work to adopt them and assists with resolving conflicts that arise. Jay’s interest in financial services began when he worked at a bank in payments and account services.

As a law student, Jay clerked for several law firms, including Adams & Reese, where he gained experience in general civil litigation, commercial and residential real estate law, housing law, contract and sales law, mass casualty insurance law, education law, and legal issues at the intersection of business and government. He also interned for The Hon. Keith Starrett of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi.

Jay received his J.D. cum laude from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he was honored with the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award and the Outstanding Student Award in Contract Drafting and Negotiation. Jay also served as Managing Editor of the Mississippi Law Journal, was a member of the Dean’s Leadership Council, and worked in the law school’s housing clinic. As the founding President of the Mississippi Law and Economics Society, Jay led a team that brought renowned speakers and panelists to the school. Prior to law school, Jay received his B.A. in Political Science cum laude, from the University of Mississippi.
