Published: Feb 23, 2026
Thornton attributed the firm's success to strategic lateral hires over the past five years in practice areas such as construction, financial services, and a niche alcohol and hospitality practice. These efforts resulted in an 8.6% increase in revenue to $186.47 million, representing a 44% increase since fiscal year 2020. Profits per equity partner rose 8.9% to $841,000, while total attorney headcount grew 4.3% to 265 attorneys.
While the firm was "conservative" in raising rates by 3%, Thornton noted that attorneys "worked harder," reporting a 5% increase in hours billed and a 2% increase in clients billed. Key clients included Harvey Gulf International Marine, which had "significant litigation" yielding "good results for the client and a strong revenue year for us," as well as Circle K and Weyerhaeuser.
Looking ahead, Thornton indicated that the firm's ongoing strategic plan emphasizes growth in practice areas, while new offices in Texas, North Carolina, and South Florida are under consideration. On potential mergers, he stated, "We're on offense. We hope to grow, and we're pursuing firms that are compatible culturally, financially, and strategically." He also acknowledged challenges with the firm's 79% realization rate, emphasizing ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and address accounts receivable issues earlier.
Overall, Thornton's interview underscores Adams & Reese's trajectory as a firm leveraging disciplined growth strategies and operational improvements to build on its recent success while positioning for continued expansion.
