Overview
Reinier Smit is an intellectual property attorney at Adams & Reese, where he helps businesses protect, manage, and commercialize their innovations and brands in the United States and abroad.
Reinier focuses his practice on patent and trademark prosecution, portfolio management, and intellectual property strategy. He prepares and prosecutes patent and trademark applications before the USPTO and international offices, advises clients on freedom-to-operate and patentability matters, and guides companies through clearance, registration, and enforcement of their marks across a wide range of industries, including horticulture, manufacturing, and consumer products.
Reinier represents startups, mid-sized businesses, and established companies that license technology to Fortune 500 corporations. He frequently drafts and negotiates license and assignment agreements, assists clients with IP ownership and work-for-hire provisions, and develops tailored IP strategies that align with product development and business goals.
When necessary, Reinier assists clients in enforcing their rights through administrative and regulatory channels, including drafting and coordinating international trade commission complaints, Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) complaints, and internet service provider (ISP) abuse reports to address counterfeiting, cybersquatting, and other unauthorized online uses of intellectual property.
With a background in mechanical engineering and prior experience in research and development, Reinier approaches IP from both a technical and commercial perspective. His engineering experience allows him to understand complex technologies, while his legal experience enables him to translate those innovations into meaningful protection. He is particularly active in the horticulture industry, where he regularly educates breeders and growers on patent and trademark protection, both domestically and internationally.
Reinier’s work often extends to international coordination, where he manages foreign counsel relationships and advises clients with operations in Europe, China, and Canada on global filing and enforcement strategies. He is known for his practical, business-minded approach, clear communication, and ability to simplify complex legal concepts for inventors, business owners, and executives alike. With a liaison in China, Reinier has educated and advised clients with manufacturing activities there.
Before entering private practice, Reinier worked in a range of technical and business environments, including in engineering consultancy, in electrical contracting, in research and development, and for multiple law firms. These experiences gave him firsthand insight into how intellectual property intersects with real-world operations – from product development and process design to manufacturing and commercialization.
Having drafted project plans for major telecommunications companies and worked alongside certified electricians wiring complex systems, Reinier developed a strong appreciation for how innovation moves from concept to implementation. This technical foundation, combined with his legal training, allows him to “speak the language” of engineers, business owners, and executives alike, and to help clients integrate intellectual property strategy into broader business objectives.
Not only an intellectual property attorney, Reinier is an inventor and multiple patent-holder with issued patents covering hydroponic containers, display systems, and ship-to-display packaging innovations.
