Builders Beware: Louisiana Contractor Licensing Changes
Published: Dec 11, 2025
This month, the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) issued a new update regarding requirements for contractors who perform residential roof work.
Effective January 1, 2026, only licensees holding Residential Construction and Residential Roofing classifications may perform residential roof work.
As a reminder, changes to the definition of “residential structure” became effective August 1, 2025, and provides, in pertinent part:
“Residential structure” means a building or structure that is used primarily for occupancy by a person as a residence. Such structures or buildings include but are not limited to single family dwellings, and duplexes which are not more than three floors in height and structures that are part of or adjacent to the building or structures to be used as a residence. A residential structure more than three floors in height may be built by a person holding a building construction and residential construction license.
Licensees who have the Building Construction or Roofing & Sheet Metal/Siding classifications are not required to take a trade exam. They need only apply for the Residential Construction and Residential Roofing classification. However, the new classification is required under the new law, and without it contractors cannot pull permits, enforce liens, or enter into a valid contract for this scope of work.
